Kintetsu Corporation, the mother company of the Kintetsu World Express (KWE) Group, was founded in 1910 as the Kinki Nippon Railway Company, Ltd., servicing the Osaka area. It later became known by the acronym “Kintetsu” which is derived from the following Japanese words: Kin (close); ki (metropolitan); and tetsu-dou (railway). Kintetsu literally means: the railway company that runs around Japan’s ancient metropolitan area. Osaka, being the ancient metropolitan area. It has since grown into the largest private railway company in Japan.
Over the years, it has expanded from a single-purpose enterprise into a multi-service, multi-product corporation with global subsidiaries in the following industries:
Transportation: Airfreight, Seafreight, Trucking, Warehousing and Contract Logistics
Railway: Transit and Terminal Operations
Tourism: Buses, Taxis, Rental Cars, Hotels, Travel Agencies
Real Estate: Commercial and Residential Development

In 1948, the operations bureau of Kinki Nippon Railways Co., Ltd. began handling international freight and travel service. It was approved as an agency by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and, in 1969, subsequently developed into Kinki Nippon Tourist Co., Ltd., becoming an all-around passenger and cargo services company. In the same year, the first offshore branch was established in Hongkong, followed by a branch in the US.
In 1970, the air cargo department was spun off and incorporated as Kintetsu World Expresss, Inc. with a license to operate as a domestic consolidator. Two years later, it was granted by the Japan Civil Aviation Bureau the license to operate as an international air freight consolidator.
Since that time, it has expanded its operation to include ocean freight forwarding, logistics, and so many other specialized allied services. With its head office located in Tokyo, Japan, it is now present in 194 cities in 32 countries, with 57 affiliated companies and a total of 308 offices worldwide as of March 2011. And has been listed in the Tokyo Stock Exchange since 2002.
